While losing a tooth after having a child may be less common than it was when this proverb was coined, modern science still suggests that a mother’s dental health can be compromised by changes she experiences during pregnancy.
From hormonal changes to nausea-induced vomiting, the process of pregnancy can put increased stress on the mother’s oral environment and result in an increased risk of edentulism. This risk increases with the birth of each child.
